Romantic Destinations in Italy

Even if you've visited ritzy London, fashionable Paris or culture-rich Vienna, a European holiday simply isn't complete if you haven't been to Italy. Each city in Europe prides itself in unique, spectacular attractions it offers, and the cities of Italy, among them Rome, Venice, Florence and Milan, are no different.

The magnificent Roman buildings in the Eternal City, the canals and gondolas of Venice,  the medieval architectural wonders of Florence, and the fashion houses in Milan all are distinctly Italian destinations that one cannot experience anywhere else.

But one of the best journeys one can have is a couple's romantic trip through Italy. Romance will surely bloom in Rome under the shadows of splendid cathedrals and abbeys, when marvelling at ancient artworks such as the Ara Pacis Augustae or altar to Peace, and architectural wonders such as the Colosseum. Quiet moments at cafes, strolls down Via Venetto, walks in the gardens of the Villa Torrlonia, or visiting the Mouth of Truth to assure that each one is truthful in love for the other. A side-trip to the Vatican, which is within the metropolitan area of Rome, would add spiritual dimension to your journey.

Venice has always been a popular romantic getaway and it is easy to see why. Riding a gondola and exploring the enchanting canals, looking at beautiful buildings along the way and with just the soft lapping of water breaking the tranquil but mesmerizing ambience make one feel truly sentimental and mushy. From the City of Lights, enhance your romantic mood by visiting the setting of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet: Verona. Though the story is tragic, the city portrayed in the great play nevertheless maintains monuments of its glorious past: ancient bridges, gates and churches. From Verona, venture to the Tuscany region, where the ancient cities of Florence, Pisa and Siena make your romantic journey more memorable, along with smaller but nonetheless picturesque towns, such as Val d'Orcia on the foot of the Amiata Mountain. The breathtaking beauty of Val d'Orcia is one of the most depicted sceneries in paintings since the Renaissance.

Other interesting destinations are the cities of Naples with its pulsating nightlife, Trento near Lake Garda which affords views of the Dolomites, and Parma, where one gets satiated not just with love but with gastronomic delights. Italy also boasts of panoramic natural wonders like Mt. Etna in Sicily, Mt.Vesuvius and Pompeii near Naples, and the extremely beautiful island of Capri. After feasting your senses in your sentimental journey, be sure to drop by chic Milan, as nothing compares giving your partner a piece or two of the most fashionable outfits as the highlight of your trip. You can be sure that when you go to Italy, it is not only your knowledge and that of your partner that grow, but your love for each other as well.
